THE DEVRY ALUMNI COMMUNITY
Adam Brown
2004 BCIS Graduate, DeVry University (Orlando, FL)
Software Engineer, Lockheed Martin Simulation, Training and Support (LM STS)
Lockheed Martin Simulation Training & Support in Orlando is hub to the largest single concentration of training and simulation activity in the nation. As a leading provider of modeling, simulation and mission rehearsal tools for military and civilian applications, LM STS focuses on live, virtual, and constructive training. Our solutions programs provide machinery controls, logistics management systems, and automated test solutions for air, land and sea military and commercial customers.
As a software engineer, I am responsible for a wide array of integration and test activities for large-scale live army training systems. I have also helped to develop and maintain software test tools that stimulate and exercise the functionalities of these systems. Frequently, because of the systems-level work that I perform, I will support off-site demonstrations and expos (i.e. IITSEC).
I use about 90% to 95% of what I studied in class at DeVry in my current job. When you combine the extensive and rigorous CIS curriculum with the project management skills developed through classes and 40+ team projects (virtual and face-to-face) that graduates must complete, you get a really potent recipe for a well-rounded, ready-to-work, ready-to-succeed graduate.
I joined the DeVry Alumni Association Advisory Board because I believe I owe a great deal to DeVry. They equipped me with the tools I needed both professionally and personally. In addition, I understand that in some areas of the nation, DeVry might not have had sufficient success in selling local employers on the capabilities of DeVry's graduates. But, with a strong and solid alumni network, I believe this effort becomes much less of a struggle. I see the opportunity to serve on the Advisory Board as a privilege.
During my undergrad years, I was a Student Ambassador for seven terms, New Student Delegate for the CIS program and Charter President of the Delta Epsilon Iota National Honor Society, DeVry Orlando chapter. I was also a Faculty Assistant and Tutor (CIS classes, English, Speech). I also worked with Habitat for Humanity (my senior project worked with the Apopka, Florida chapter), American Heart Walk, Toys-For-Tots and Second Harvest.
Through work, I now help to administer a new hire retention team called NEON (New Employee Opportunity Network). This team works with Human Resources to develop ways in which new hires can be brought into LM STS in a manner that is both welcoming and supportive. We also help make visible the new talent that is being pumped into the company.
For those looking for a job, having a strong alumni network of a couple hundred-thousand professionals across the nation is huge, not only for recent grads but for those looking to make a horizontal move in their current careers. For employers seeking talent, DeVry is a hotspot for some very talented and application-oriented graduates. Not only will employers receive someone more-than-dangerous in a wide array of technical disciplines, but also someone that knows how to work in a team environment (both virtually and face-to-face), with a solid understanding of business principles and project management best practices.
DeVry University graduates belong to a community of professionals that work in just about every major industry today. With nearly a quarter-million alumni, that's something to be darn proud of.
